Tornado Weather Session Begins May 19th!

If I had to pick one area of meteorology that generates the most interest and questions…it would be the subject of tornadoes.  Each year, we have storms that threaten tornadoes, but why do they only sometimes produce tornadoes?  I’ll be answering this question and others in my next weather workshop on tornadoes.

My brother, Dr. Chris Karstens, is a researcher at the severe storms lab in Norman, OK and is an expert in the latest science on tornadoes.  I’m looking forward to sharing some of the interesting thoughts he has, plus we’ll dig into some local tornado facts and history for the Sioux Falls area.  Sign up today…classes begin May 19th!

The class fee is $30 per student, with additional students from the same family $25 each. The fee covers one class per week for the four week session.

Class Openings for Upcoming Session

There are still openings for the classes that begin next week. Please email us if you would like to get signed up!

Upcoming Class Opportunity!

Severe weather season is upon us and I have a new opportunity for students to get prepared for some of our most memorable weather in Sioux Falls!  My latest workshop is on the topic of thunderstorms, one of the most asked about areas of weather and a personal interest of mine.  If the topic of thunderstorms perks your students interest, I still have openings for my latest weather workshop.

We’ll cover the basics of how a thunderstorm develops and what goes into a thunderstorm forecast.

I am also gathering some new data looking back at  South Dakota’s record-breaking hail storm in 2010 near Vivian, south of Pierre.  We’ll put on our thinking caps on as we look back at the weather conditions from that day, including a look at 3D radar to find nearly volleyball size hail!

We’ve been covering lightning in our current week of classes, but there’s much more to uncover about the science of lightning and how to stay safe during every thunderstorm this summer.

As always, feel free to contact me at karstensclasses@gmail.com for more information about this class!

The next session of weather classes begins April 18th!

Our next weather class session will begin the week of April 18th:  Thunderstorms!  We are exploring the beginning of this subject this week in my current classes, but in the next session we’ll dive deeper and discover how they work.

We have about 40 to 50 thunderstorm days a year in the Sioux Falls area, but what ingredients does it take to make a storm?  We’ll take a closer look at what makes these storms tick and discuss some of our own observations of thunderstorms over the 4 week session with the students.

I’ll also talk about the latest lightning science, plus we’ll uncover what caused some of the biggest hail stones ever recorded (a top record holder was found here in South Dakota!).  Storms like this can be scary, but we’ll learn how to recognize some of the dangers of thunderstorms and stay safe!  I’m planning to do a series on tornadoes after that, starting mid-May.…so check back for updates on that!

Classes will be $30 per student, any additional students from the same family will be $25 per child. This will cover one class per week (multiple class day/time options are available), for the four week session.

Parents are welcome to attend with their children!
