Tornado Classes Begin Thursday, May 19th!
We are almost ready to launch the next four week series of weather science classes on tornadoes! Classes begin this Thursday, May 19th. This 4 week series will include valuable information about a topic that is interesting for most students, but can also be a sensitive topic since they can be scary for some children. I totally understand that and had a fear of tornadoes myself growing up. However, the more I learned about tornadoes, the less fearful I became, and I hope these classes will be a good way to learn more about severe weather.
The Thursday 4 – 5 p.m. class is almost full, but all the rest have plenty of openings, so please feel free to register up to the day of classes.
Topics this session will include a background on defining tornadoes and developing a good understanding of how they form. I’ll also share how we track tornadoes with LIVE doppler radar to keep the public informed about these severe weather threats.
We’ll also have a session on tornado history, including a look back at Tornado Tuesday in South Dakota from 2003. I witnessed a number of tornadoes that day, including the EF-4 tornado that struck Manchester, SD.
I’m also planning to talk about some of the latest tornado research and we’ll review tornado safety and discuss some interesting tornado myths.
Because my job at KELOLAND TV requires me to be on call for severe weather, we will have to reschedule classes if I am called in to work before or during classes. Right now we are looking at June 23rd as a backup date for the Thursday classes at Faith Fellowship in Sioux Falls, and June 24th as a back up date for the Friday classes at the Pizza Ranch in Lennox.
The fee for classes is $30 for the first student in a family and $25 each for additional students from the same family. The fee covers one class per week for the four week session.
Classes will be held at Faith Baptist on Thursdays. There are two classes for the 7 – 10 age range, one from 4 – 5 p.m. (this class is almost full, all the rest have plenty of spots still open), and a class from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The 7:00 – 8:15 p.m. class is for ages 10 & up.
Classes on Fridays are held at the Pizza Ranch in Lennox. There are two classes available, the 7 – 10 year old class will be held from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m, and the class for ages 10 & up will be held from 2:45 to 4:00 p.m.
You know your children best, please use the ages listed just as a guideline. Some younger children may be ready for classes, and you can sure have multiple siblings in the same class, even if one may be a little older or younger than the ages for that class. Just let us know what works best for your family! Parents are more than welcome to attend with their children!
