May 2017 Classes: 4 Week Session
May is just around the corner and so is severe weather season. If your student is interested in tornadoes and learning about the latest science happening, you can sign up for the new 4 session series on tornadoes starting May 11th.
We have 1 week left with my current weather class and it has been another fun series. We’ve learned all about exciting spring weather, including the “real” shape of rain drops, the difference between negative and positively charged lightning, and we looked at a casting of the world’s largest hail stone which fell right here in South Dakota nearly 7 years ago!
There’s so much in weather science to explore, and I will be offering a 4-week session on tornadoes in May. If you have a student that is scared of storms at times (that was me growing up), I try to really approach the class with good information so we can understand how to stay safe and informed during storms.
I’ll be sharing new research from my brother, Dr. Chris Karstens, about what is being done at the National Severe Storms Laboratory to help predict future storms with better accuracy. We will walk through how to build a model tornado with some pretty simple things at home, and will be doing a couple of map exercises to show how important geography is to weather, especially in big weather events. I also have some interesting new statistics on tornado trends around Sioux Falls that I would like to share.
We’ll be filling out weather journals again as well to study how our day to day weather changes over the 4 sessions.
